Materials for low impact building

Car Tyre Foundation & Straw-bale Walls Detail

The unique combination of environmental socioeconomic and natural resource issues facing our species as we approach the 21st century challenge us toward more sustainable systems.straw-bale building material with its inherent sustainability not only provides energy efficiency, good acoustic effect, ease of installation and cost-effectiveness but also reduces carbon emission and energy used in transport and manufacturing.

In this particular project, a load-bearing straw-bale construction is employed. The car tyre foundation detail chosen is based upon protecting environment purpose. There have been a large amount of used tyres, which are produced each year. Air pollutants from tyre fires include toxic gases, causing not only air pollution but also water pollution, which are harmful for our living environment. If tyres are used for building construction as a recycle material instead of being burned,it would benefit us not only financial aspect but also healthy climate.

Rethinking Physical Modeling Through Mixed Reality Interface

Traditional digital modeling tools have focused on mouse, keyboard and stylus input. These tools may have the limitation to give a better understanding for audiences to get the main idea of the exciting designs. We seek to bring physical interaction to digital modeling, to allow users to use existing physical objects as tangible building blocks for new designs. In order to achieve the target, we propose a new paradigm, Tangible User Interfaces, which argues for having some of the virtual user interface elements take on physical realities. Generic remote sense devices input (e.g., remote wireless laptop connector, 2D code cube) are primarily used to manipulate these virtual interface elements.

The combination between physical modeling, digital data and mechanic engineering will allow audience to explore new ways of integrating movement, music with visual display in content variations for the physical model, creating the biggest difference between a mixed-reality model and a traditional physical mode.
